Set Achievable Health And Fitness Goals

You want to get in shape. You really do. But somehow, you just can’t seem to make it happen. You start off strong, but then somewhere along the way you lose motivation and give up. Sound familiar?

The good news is, you’re not alone. In fact, research shows that 85% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February. The even better news is that there are some simple steps you can take to make sure you’re part of the 20% that succeeds.

Pick the Right Goal

When it comes to health and fitness, “getting in shape” is a pretty vague goal. And unfortunately, vague goals are more likely to fail than specific ones. So the first step is to be specific about what you want to achieve.

Do you want to lose weight? Run a half marathon? Be able to do a pull-up? Strength train 3x per week? Make sure your goal is something you can measure so you know when you’ve achieved it.

Make a Plan

Once you know what your goal is, it’s time to make a plan of action. This doesn’t have to be complicated—in fact, the simpler, the better. Start by identifying what steps you need to take to achieve your goal, and then break those down into small, manageable pieces. For example, if your goal is to run a half marathon, your plan might look something like this:

- Sign up for a race that’s 12 weeks away

- Start running 3 days per week, 20 minutes per day

- After 2 weeks, increase running time to 30 minutes per day

- After 4 weeks, increase running time to 45 minutes per day…and so on

- 2 weeks before race day, taper off training so you’re well rested for the big day!

Again, the key here is simplicity—you want your plan to be easy enough that you can actually stick with it.

Find an Accountability Partner

One of the main reasons people give up on their fitness goals is because they lack accountability. It’s easy enough to keep going when things are going well, but as soon as life gets busy or we have a bad workout, we’re quick to give up and revert back to our old ways. That’s why finding an accountability partner—someone who will help keep you on track when things get tough—can be such a game changer. Here at HOMEFIT, we offer semi private training. Grab a friend or family member to train with you to add that extra layer of accountability. Contact us today.

If getting healthy and fit is one of your goals for 2023, follow these simple tips and increase your chances of success! First, pick a specific goal that you can measure. Then make a simple plan for how you will achieve that goal. And finally, find an accountability partner who will help keep you on track when things get tough.
